Lightning
in our area
The strike rate here is at least 40 strikes per km2
per year. The highest in the USA.
That means that if your average strike affects a circle of 50m, then
the area is
7800 m2 , which in turn means that there are
about 128 strikes required to completely affect just one km2.
In the course of ~3 years, everything could be hit in our
own little square km(!).
Just how small is that?
Pretty small. Here is a square kilometre approximately centred on us.
The white circle is the rough damage extent of one strike (supposing
it's only 50m).
In reality, damage to telephone lines and attached devices (modems)
extends far beyond the 50m radius.
Likewise, direct damage or incremental damage occurs to telephone
pole-mounted transformers.
This lightning activity is concentrated heavily into the Summer months:
Frightened yet?
That means that in June, July & August there's a lightning
strike within 700m of us around 10 times per month! Some protection measures
